Background of the Study
Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a highly effective biomedical intervention that can significantly reduce the risk of HIV acquisition among high-risk populations. In Sokoto State, increasing awareness and uptake of PrEP have become important components of comprehensive HIV prevention strategies. PrEP involves the daily use of antiretroviral medications by HIV-negative individuals to prevent HIV infection, particularly in populations with high incidence rates (Ibrahim, 2024; Adeyemi, 2023).

Despite the proven efficacy of PrEP, awareness and uptake remain low in many regions due to factors such as limited knowledge, stigma, and accessibility challenges. In Sokoto State, barriers to PrEP uptake may include misinformation about the medication, cultural beliefs that discourage preventive measures, and inadequate integration of PrEP services into existing healthcare facilities. Public health campaigns and targeted interventions have shown promise in improving PrEP awareness in other settings, yet there is limited data on their effectiveness in Sokoto State (Chukwu, 2024).

This study aims to evaluate the level of awareness and uptake of PrEP in Sokoto State. It will assess the extent of knowledge about PrEP among high-risk populations and explore the factors influencing its acceptance and use. Data will be collected through surveys, focus group discussions, and interviews with healthcare providers and community members. The findings will be used to identify gaps in current HIV prevention efforts and to propose strategies to enhance PrEP dissemination and utilization. Improving PrEP awareness and uptake is critical for reducing new HIV infections and strengthening overall HIV prevention efforts in the region (Ogunleye, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
In Sokoto State, low awareness and uptake of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) are major obstacles to effective HIV prevention. Despite its potential to significantly reduce HIV transmission, many individuals at high risk remain unaware of PrEP as an option, and those who are aware often face barriers to accessing the medication. Misinformation, stigma surrounding HIV prevention methods, and limited integration of PrEP services into primary healthcare contribute to the underutilization of this critical intervention (Lawal, 2023).

The lack of targeted public health campaigns to promote PrEP and inadequate training for healthcare providers on its benefits further exacerbate the problem. Consequently, HIV incidence continues to be high in high-risk groups, undermining broader HIV prevention efforts. This gap in PrEP awareness and uptake poses a serious challenge to reducing new HIV infections and achieving long-term public health goals.

This study seeks to address these issues by evaluating PrEP awareness and uptake among high-risk populations in Sokoto State. By identifying the key factors that hinder PrEP utilization, the research will provide evidence-based recommendations to improve education, access, and integration of PrEP services into existing healthcare frameworks.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of PrEP awareness among high-risk populations in Sokoto State.
  2. To evaluate the uptake of PrEP and identify barriers to its utilization.
  3. To recommend strategies to enhance PrEP awareness and access.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of awareness of PrEP among high-risk populations in Sokoto State?
  2. What factors influence the uptake of PrEP?
  3. What interventions can improve PrEP awareness and usage?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Low awareness of PrEP is significantly associated with low uptake rates.
  2. Misinformation and stigma are major barriers to PrEP utilization.
  3. Targeted interventions will significantly increase PrEP uptake.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on high-risk populations in Sokoto State. Data will be collected via surveys, interviews, and focus group discussions. Limitations include potential self-report bias and variability in access across different regions.

Definitions of Terms

  • PrEP: Pre-exposure prophylaxis, a medication regimen for preventing HIV infection.
  • Uptake: The rate at which eligible individuals begin using PrEP.
  • High-Risk Populations: Groups at increased risk of HIV infection.
